BAKERSFIELD TO SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIFORNIA

We drove route 58 across from Bakersfield to San Luis, a twisting, pretty, peaceful road taking us through fruit trees to oil fields to farms full of solar panels instead of cows. We took an 8 mile detour to see what Carrizo Plain National Monument was, a huge area obviously full of some rare species of wildlife but all we saw was the sign, Soda lake in the distance, a herd of pronghorn and a red tailed hawk!
Still hot, reaching 40oC/104oF, we camped at El Chorro Country Park and had a hike to Eagle Rock, smiling to ourselves when we saw the warnings at the start of the hike – Beware Mountain Lions, Rattlesnakes, Poison Oak and Ticks.... now most of you would be scared of the mountain lions and snakes but for us, the dread of ticks is far worse, having experienced them first hand when we started our travels in 2008, we had no idea about them until we discovered them – in places I cannot possibly comment on here!
