PACIFIC WHALE FOUNDATION SUNRISE WHALE WATCH

This was the main reason we came to Maui - to see the whales. Around 1000 - 1200 are here now, breeding, giving birth and mating. The adult grows to 42 - 45 feet long and weighs 35 - 40 tons. Newborn calves are 10 - 15ft and weigh 1.5 - 2 tons.

We took the 6-45am sunrise cruise on the smaller raft. It was sensational! The few good photos I managed to get do not do them justice. We heard the whales singing through the hydrophone, only males sing - hauntingly beautiful. We saw mothers and their babies, females being chased by amorous males, spy hopping when they rise relatively straight out of the water and pectoral fin slap - an unforgettable experience.

I can see you!
