A EVENING AT THE OLD LAHAINA LUAU

making my flower ornament
Greeted with an orchid flower, Mai Tai and Kukui nut lei, we strolled round the lovely beach setting, had a look at the Kalua Pua’a - Pork roasted in a beachside “imu” - the Hawaiian underground oven. Watched the pig being dug out. Watched a  young man make flowers, butterflies, fish etc from coconut leaves, he made me a fish. Watched a girl assemble plumeria flowers into hair ornaments and given one.
Drinks were included - Pina Colada, Chi Chi, Lava Flow, Blue Hawaii, Green Passion, Honey Girl, Little Tita, Nalu Special and Island Warrior plus beer or wine! Thought about having one of each cocktail but stuck to Mai Tai - light rum, special mai tai mix, float dark rum - lovely!
Chatted with 6 folks at our table who were from Illinois. Went to feast, food was exceptional.
Kalua Pua’a pork; Laulau - bundles of pork wrapped in taro leaf and cooked till tender; Poi - made by steaming and mashing Taro - a potato like root; Ahi Poke - raw yellow fin tuna with green onions, seaweed and Maui onions; Pulehu steak; Island style chicken; Maui style fish; stir fry vegetables; local style fried rice; Island crab salad; Lomilomi Salmon - local tomatoes, Maui onions and salted salmon; Pohole salad - fern shoot and Maui onions mixed with tomatoes; Sweet potato and more!. There were assorted Island dessert.
The show started, music, hula and the story of the Islands.Beautiful women and men with amazing dancing - how do they get their hips to move like that!
We left very happy and like all good parties given a goody bag with piece of cake in. (Our pack up for tomorrow!)
What an awesome day we have had!
