There
are some roads in the States which you just cannot say are great –
we drove for 2 hours, 106 miles on the West 6/50 – a straight
boring road along endless desert, we saw Sevier Lake, which looked at
first as if it was a salt flat, a couple of hawks and as we left
Delta we did see the Telescope Array, which totally baffled us, one
of three fluorescence telescopes sites with an array of over 500
surface detectors. Something in space is launching in the incredibly
small particles with astounding levels of energy. The ultra-high
energy cosmic rays are essentially single protons, each one packing
the punch of a World Series fastball. But where exactly is the cosmic
pitcher's mound? “Well that’s the billion dollar question” the
professor of Utah's college of Science says. “These particles are
extremely rare. But when they do hit us, they hit us with an enormous
bang” And if you understand that lot – good for you!
