BEAVER MOUNTAIN TO SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH

We got a free nights campsite at Beaver Mountain Ski Resort, it was just a car park with electric hook ups and wifi, sign said $20 pay the host. The host never appeared despite Roy trying three times at his trailer - that's my kind of site!

We travelled through such a pretty canyon, Logan Canyon with the stunning autumn colours of green, gold, yellow and burnt orange and then at the end you just popped out and straight into the main street of Logan.

A GLIMPSE OF THE GREAT SALT LAKE

As I thought, as soon as we hit the motorway at Brigham City, everything went downhill. We got a glimpse of the Great Salt Lake then it was miles of concrete jungle. We said we wanted to see Salt Lake City but have really come for some parts for the trailer. We are not lovers of big cities, but

THE SALT LAKE TEMPLE

Despite our reluctance to visit the big cities we wanted to see Salt Lake City. Roy spent the morning sorting out parts for the trailer and getting an oil seal on the truck and in the afternoon we drove into downtown Salt Lake.

Quite an experience - Upon the arrival of the Latter-day Saints in Utah, Church President Brigham Young declared "This is the place" and within four days had chosen the site for the Salt Lake Temple and designed the city's grid layout. Streets are wide ( wide enough to turn around and oxen and cart, Brigham had said), all streets are named for their directional distance from the Temple.

The downtown area was so quiet, we parked at the side of the wide road for free and walked to the Temple Square. The Temple was a masterpiece of architecture, built of granite which was hauled 20 miles. Temple Square is beautifully landscaped and three of the buildings on the square were built by the pioneers: the magnificent six-spired granite Salt Lake Temple which took 40 years to complete; the domed Tabernacle, home of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Assembly Hall.

We had only just walked into one of the visitors centers surrounding the square when Roy began talking with a  Mormon "Sister", a young girl from Manchester who had been chosen to serve in Salt Lake City. While Roy spent 20 minutes telling this girl all about our travels, I spoke with an Indian girl who was also a "Sister" and did her very best to convert me to the Mormon way of life. I think she gave up after I had listened to all she had to say, which was very interesting, and then she asked about my religion. She seemed lost when I said I had Humanist beliefs, she knew nothing about them. Our talk was very informative but I left feeling that the girl sounded kind of brain washed in the way she spoke despite her saying she had chosen her way of life - each to their own.

We looked round the outside of the Temple, only special people are allowed inside!! Saw the chairs where the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sit in the Tabernacle and visited the Assembly Hall, which Roy said had a look of Nashville Grand Ole Opry!

We thoroughly enjoyed our Mormon afternoon!
