SANTA ROSA ISLAND - FLORIDA

House to rent

Arrived in Florida on Tuesday at Pensacola and camped on Santa Rosa Island at a National Park site. We reached this tiny island by toll bridge then along the Fort Pickens road - well it was more like a strip of tarmac between the sand dunes with water perilously close on both sides and prone to flooding they say.
With the Gulf of Mexico on one side and Pensacola Bay on the other and not much elevation in between, lets hope the weather stays settled!

Next day we walked to Fort Pickens from our campsite, the largest of four forts built to defend Pensacola Bay and its navy yard. The only real action the fort endured was during the Civil War. The self guided tour was interesting and we also learnt about Geronimo being imprisoned here.

Our afternoon beachcombing gave us exercise but little else, there were thousands of shells, just not that special one I was looking for!
